MY MORNING BREW

As the winter season comes upon us, I felt it necessary to share one of my favourite immune boosting natural remedies. This may not cure the common cold but it is a delicious way to start your morning with many added health benefits! It was originally forced upon me by mother, in the loving caring way mothers do, and has been a morning staple in my daily routine ever since. 

I am not one to spend a lot of time fussing over things in my morning routine. This drink can be made as quickly as a cup of tea, placed into your morning traveler and out the door with you. If you have more time in the morning you can also brew this blend together in a pot over the stove for about 10 min, add the honey after and serve.  

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 chunk of ginger sliced (about 1")
  • 1 stick of cinnamon or a good helping of powdered cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey 
  • 2-3 fresh mint leaves 
  • 3 cups of boiled water

Optional addition:

  • White tea (if you need a little caffeine kick)

Preparation:

Boil water, add all of the ingredients in any order, let steep (especially if you add tea), and drink! Simple stuff. 

So what are the health benefits?

Lemon is the superfood of all superfoods. It's most obvious benefit being a source of vitamin C which has many immune boosting properties. High levels of potassium are also found in lemons. Potassium helps reduce the body of free radicals, increase red blood cell production and control blood pressure. In addition to this, lemons also balance pH levels turning our bodies from acidic to alkaline, aid in weight loss, and improves digestion. Pretty powerful stuff!

Ginger is an anti-inflammatory superfood. It is normally used for digestive issues and can help you ease nausea when you feel sick. It is also used to lower pain that is caused by inflammation, such as joint pain, which often comes along with the flu. It helps promote detoxification by creating inner heat so you can burn off those bacteria that are haunting you.

Cinnamon is "anti-microbial" which means it slows the growth of bacteria. It is also anti-inflammatory, so it boosts your overall health and immune-system. Additionally the scent can help boost your brain, which is helpful when you feel all foggy from a cold. Cinnamon also helps balance blood-sugar, which can be helpful when you add the raw honey, even though raw honey does not affect blood-sugar imbalances the way other sugars do. Cinnamon and ginger is used together as a remedy for the common cold in Chinese medicine.

Raw honey is another superfood, but choose the raw unpasteurized version to get the benefits. The syrup stuff will not do the trick. Raw honey is anti-everything about the cold; anti-bacterial and anti-viral and anti-fungal so it can help soothe not only your sweet-tooth, but also your cold. It is also anti-inflammatory and alkalizing where sugar is acidifying and it is an anti-oxidant. It is used to treat respiratory congestion, bronchitis and asthma.

Mint is a digestive aid, as it soothes stomachs in cases of indigestion or inflammation. The aroma of mint stimulates the salivary glands in the mouth as well as glands that secrete digestive enzymes, thereby facilitating digestion.
